Just Right - The new alternative to Evergreen Giant

Liriope muscari 'LIRJ' PBR

By Nathan Dutschke

Unfortunately Liriope Evergreen Giant is no longer a stable variety.  For years now Evergreen Giant has been grown by nurseries all over Australia from seed and it now comes in all shapes and sizes and is highly variable. Just Right however is grown from either tissue culture or division, which means that you will be supplied with an identical growing plant each tim e, which will grow to the same size and shape. This is very important especially for consistent mass plantings. Evergreen giant has been an incredibly significant landscape plant, however with its inconsistency; Just Right has come just in time.

As its name suggests Liriope Just Right is not too big or too small; it is Just Right. Just Right is the new superior alternative to the popular Liriope Evergreen Giant. Just Right remains more evergreen, is more uniform and forms a nice clean, clumping upright habit.

Just Right is just the right size and will grow to approximately 45cm to 50cm tall by 45cm to 50cm in width, whereas some Evergreen Giant forms can grow up to 700 or 800mm tall.

Other added benefits for using Just Right are that the leaves are slightly stronger and more robust than Evergreen Giant. The slightly stronger leaf means that the foliage does not tend to yellow off and burns less in the sun and in the frosts. The leaf is also slightly finer on Just Right, making the clump look more dense and compact. Just Right is a very versatile plant and is one of a few plants that can grow really well in Tasmania right through to Cairns and Darwin. Just Right grows well in moderate to heavy shaded positions, such as dark areas between 2 buildings as well as in full sun. Just Right can remain more evergreen than any other Liriope in drought, the cold or the wet, making it the best landscape Liriope available, plus it also has good resistance to Phytophthora compared to Evergreen Giant.

Fortunately, Just Right so far over the last 6 years has never once produced a viable seed, this is good news environmentally, because it will not spread and come up in the bush on its own, whereas Evergreen Giant seeds a lot and does have the potential to spread into native bushland.
