So why support plants suited to NSW?

By Katrina Layt

Grasses and strappy leaf plants that have been used in Queenslands large landscape projects often are not suitable. Some of these include Little Rev, Cassa Blue, Tanika, Lomandra confertifolia without rhizomes and other unproven Dianellas and Lomandra's. These plants aren't suited to the growing conditions of QLD.

So use plants that are proven to work in Queensland and don’t let down your clients with false hope. Some great plants to use are Little Jess, Tropic Belle, Katie Belles, Wingarra, Katrinus Deluxe and King Alfred.

Little Jess Dianella caerulea ‘DCMP01’ is the star of Dianella plants in Queensland. Low maintenance along with its compact masses of purple flowers make it the perfect plant. It can be used as a border plant, mass planting and roadside planting, seen in many parts of Queensland.

Tropic Belle Lomandra hystrix ‘LHCOM’ is more compact than the common Lomandra hystrix with great golden flowers. It is much smaller and more uniform and is highly tolerant to root rot.

Katie Belles Lomandra hystrix ‘LHBYF’ is the best flowering Lomandra, with big bold clumps of flowers in autumn and spring. The flowers have a great perfume as well.

Wingarra Lomandra confertifolia ‘SIR5’ is the only Lomandra confertifolia that has rhizomes and is proven to work in Queensland for drier areas. It doesn't outcompete weeds as well as some of the larger plants but if a smaller size plant is needed this is ideal.

Katrinus Deluxe Lomandra longifolia is the only 100% flowering Lomandra longifolia to be proven to work in south east QLD.

King Alfred Dianella caerulea ‘John 316’ is the only blue grey foliage plant that works for QLD. It needs a trim every 1-2 yrs but is easy to grow and tolerates most conditions.
