PURPLE LEA®
Pennisetum alopecuroides 'PA400'
Add Colour to Your Landscape
Environment
An environmentally friendly Australian native. Excellent for attracting native birds.
With a low viability of seed, this form is non-invasive to native bushland.
Description
A showy clumping perennial grass with arching leaves and spectacular feathery flower plumes from Summer to Autumn.
The feature of this variety is its elegant purple flower heads.
Uses
Mass planting, accent plant for rockeries and borders. Low maintenance gardens. Plumes suitable for dried arrangements.
Position
Tolerates a wide variety of soils and climatic conditions, including poorly drained soils. Frost and drought tolerant.
Care
Mulch well. Trim to 1/3 the size preferably in April/March or when required. Fertilize with a slow release fertilizer in late Winter.
If you require colour and don't mind a larger plant, then Purple Lea is the ideal plant for you.
This plant must be grown from division due to its low viability of seed, thus giving you piece of mind that it will stay where it is planted.
Don't be confused...
In this photo on the right we have the flowers of two varieties of Pennisetum alopecuroides.
On the left side of the photo is the native, non-invasive Pennisetum alopecuroides.
On the right side of the photo is the highly invasive African variety of Pennisetum setaceum.
Unfortunately many people often confuse the native for the exotic and vice-versa.
