Genus Biodiversity Chart for Urban Ecology

Ozbreed recognises the growing desire for specifiers to provide more ecological support and genetic diversity within their landscapes. As such, we are committed to providing more resources to help you make informed decisions.

One of these resources is our new Genus Biodiversity Chart in the 2025-26 Desktop Specification Guide. This chart outlines which genera offer which resources to which fauna. Of course, ecology will always be site-specific, so just because an ecological resource (such as a particular flower) is on offer, that doesn’t mean that it will be used by the site-specific fauna.

However, as a general rule, we can say that “biodiversity increases biodiversity,” especially when the plants are tough enough to thrive where common forms of the same species struggle. Treat this guide as a big-picture starting point and understand that there are many over-simplifications implicit due to the complex nature of urban ecology.

It’s simply a tool to help you in your journey to creating more sustainable and ecologically meaningful spaces. And don’t forget the value of micro climates, oxygen, carbon and h2o!

Daniel’s Wrap

Ecological contexts have changed since urbanisation, and specifiers should be careful not to fall into the trap of treating urban areas as natural resource management.

The locally indigenous plants may or may not be more ecologically meaningful when taken out of their contexts; instead of trying to support numbats when there is the constant sound of traffic and lawn mowers, we can support possums and bats instead.
