Beautiful Mulberry Purple Flower Buds

Lucia is a low growing Dianella caerulea that has an amazing ability to spread. Obviously you would not use it as a garden border amongst other plants, as it will spread in to them, but on a medium strip, large mass planted areas or along a fence, or as a ground cover it excels. Lucia is by far the fastest spreading Dianella ever.

It has unusual deep mulberry colour flowers, which are bold and prolific. Planted at 6 plants per square metre , it is a low cost drought tolerant ground cover option for mass planting.

Lucia have beautiful mulberry purple flower buds that form in early Spring opening to a 5 petal star shaped flowers with a bluish - purple tinge and yellow anthers in mid to late Spring. Purple berries form thereafter in early Summer.

Lucia forms a dense ground cover with exceptional coverage from multiple rhizome shoots to develop a mat of foliage. This attribute allows it to carpet to ground well and recover quickly from damage.

Dimensions
Lucia grows 300mm–400mm tall and 500mm wide. Lucia has non invasive spreading rhizomes which give it the ability to fill in gaps and repair itself from damage and rejuvenate.

Flowers
Spring & summer. Deep mulberry coloured flower buds opening to star shape with bluish - purple tinge held high above the foliage, followed by purple berries.

Aspect
Grows in full sun to 90% shade. Prefers protected coastal aspects. Grows well in coastal humidity and inland climates. Will handle frost to –7C with only minor leaf burn which will be renewed with new growth in spring.

Soil Types
Sandy loam, clay loam, free draining clay soils. Doesn’t like water logged soils.

Mulch Type
No problems with any well composted, processed mulch type.
